I have had many recent opportunities to work with and observe Charlene taking care of patients in the hospital. Charlene goes beyond to ensure the patients who have wounds get the best care in and out of the hospital. Frequently, Charlene follows up daily on many patients just to see how they are and has developed relationships with them. They trust Charlene and count on her. One patient in particular whom Charlene has cared for is J. This is a young 23-year-old male who ended up in the hospital with a serious bowel obstruction requiring surgery and intensive care, resulting in an ileostomy. J was frightened and overwhelmed, to say the least, to find himself not only in the hospital dealing with surgery but with an ostomy that he would have to manage for a long time, if not forever. Charlene has developed a very nice relationship with J. She started seeing him in ICU when he was critical and followed him throughout his hospitalization. Charlene has patiently educated him about this new way of life with his ostomy with sensitivity and compassion. I recently observed Charlene watching him demonstrate his newfound skill of changing out his pouch, etc. He did a great job. Charlene praised him and encouraged him the whole time. This shy, apprehensive young man has gained confidence in doing this and it is all because of Charlene 's expertise in educating and following up with him frequently. It is not just her knowledge and skill, though, but Charlene's kindness and caring that are genuine and real. The whole thing was very awesome to watch. I imagine Charlene will be keeping in touch with him and his mom to make sure he has what he needs as he traverses this unknown territory.
