The evening proved to be one of those shifts many of us would not soon forget. Jill Doherty was in Charge that evening. Patient acuity was high.
A middle age African American male was life-flighted to the MICU to receive lifesaving treatment. In flight, the gentlemen went into cardiac arrest twice so the odds were stacked against him. He needed immediate line placement to receive emergent dialysis. This was only the beginning of the challenge for this man as he would arrest again in our unit before treatment could even begin.
While the nurse caring for this man deserves recognition it was the steadfast patience that Jill displayed in obstacle after obstacle to keep our unit running effectively that deserves to be praised. Jill is long overdue for recognition of this award.
Once Quinton line placement was established for this man, Dialysis was to begin. However, the water pressure in his room would not allow for Dialysis to begin. It was decided to emergently laterally transfer a patient out of our unit to another ICU to get this man moved into a different room while he was on life sustaining drips and the Artic Sun. Once he was moved into his new room in the unit; again water pressure was an issue and Dialysis was delayed. So back to his original room he moved to have hoses brought in to diaylize him from a separate water source that would allow the dialysis machine to function.
NEVER once did Jill loose her cool! Not only did she have two patients of her own, a disgruntled family member to appease, and a MET to respond to she effortlessly coordinated all this as well. Multiple road blocks occurred that evening that are not even described in this nomination. The icing on the cake was by morning this very patient that flew in to MUSC/MICU, arrested three times and was unresponsive, was actually following commands by morning.
I can't even begin to describe how proud I am of the teamwork that occurred this evening. I hope this nomination will allow Jill to see her value as one of the best nurses the MICU has. Her execution to get things done under pressure is consistent and we are all proud to work with her!
