There was a patient on 3 Tower that was reluctant to pursue further workup. She refused her much needed GI consult along with CAT scans etc. This patient felt fine so thought she was fine and was very anxious to leave. After talking to doctors and nurse practitioners about further work ups the patient still wanted to go home.
It was a crazy day full of post ops on 3 Tower. Despite the craziness of the unit that day, Cathryn Millares, RN took the time to sit down with this patient and go over all the patient's concerns. As a result of Cathryn's time, the patient changed her mind and decided to do the testing as long as Cathryn would go with her and stay with her during the test. Cathryn did. Sadly, there was a mass found.
The patient talked to me later that evening and praised Cathryn. She would not have done the tests if Cathryn did not take the time out to talk to her. The patient was so happy to have a nurse like Cathryn.
When the patient told me about everything it brought tears to my eyes, as it did hers. iCARE values were demonstrated by this nurse and I feel very fortunate to have someone like her on our team!
