My mom was diagnosed with esophageal cancer that metastasized. We came to the hospital thinking she would get a PEG and port-a-cath and that we would be on our way. We had been to the hospital many times. Transitioning back and forth to home. But we had no idea that we would be facing her final transition. This was one of the most challenging times in our lives.
One nurse stood out during this experience. Her name was Donella. Donella was sweet and kind. When she would have breaks, she would come into the room and talk to me and my family. If there was something we didn't understand, she would arrange for the doctors and specialists to meet with us. Donella was a gem. She took our minds off the hard times we were facing. She made sure my mom was comfortable and she made sure we were comfortable. She truly went above and beyond, and we will never forget her.
