I have worked with Ms. Lewis for 7 years and I am in awe of her dedication to our Vets. She is the most professional, compassionate charge nurse I have ever had the pleasure of working with. Each year I am amazed at her steadfast work ethic. She always goes the extra mile to help the patients and her coworkers. Ms. Lewis is in constant communication with the other disciplines concerning the quality of care the Vets on 7-1 are receiving.
Recently, we had an elderly Vet who was receiving treatment from an outside facility. Transportation was an issue and when it was suggested that the patient should take the Metro bus, Ms. Lewis leaped into action. She was relentless in getting this patient safe travel. This was not an easy task!
Ms. Lewis is always patient with those under her charge and is a very thorough preceptor; she leads by example and inspires me personally to always give my best. She sets the bar high, not just in words but by her actions. Brenda carries this "lead by example" into her care for the Veterans. She is always kind even when the Veterans are being difficult. She remains calm and composed; with this demeanor, she has helped many Veterans make it through the 28-day program.
Unfortunately, with the nature of this type of unit, we have returning Vets and the first staff member they look for is Brenda. She is always an encouragement to those returning. She patiently listens to their stories with empathy and compassion. Ms. Lewis empowers them to take back their lives by encouraging them to make healthy choices. Ms. Lewis comes to work with a smile on her face and her sleeves rolled up ready to work! She is an asset to nursing and a genuine caregiver to the fragile lives entrusted to her.
