I met Renee Maker when I was caring for a patient in the ER who came in for issues related to a newly placed ileostomy. The patient was discharged only a few days prior to her ER visit. The ER consulted Wound Care to assist with placing a new appliance and to offer additional education to the nervous emotional patient. Renee was a blessing! She had actually cared for this patient during her surgical hospital stay which immediately calmed the patient.
Renee spent a lot of time helping me cleanse the patient and change the linens. She applied a new appliance all while providing the most supportive emotional care and refreshing the patient's education. The patient was more confident and more at ease after her interaction with Renee. Renee returned to the ER shortly before the patient's discharge. She bought some additional supplies for the patient to use, if needed, for her ostomy care at home.
Renee also brought a stuffed animal that she purchased from the Hamot Gift Shop which immediately put a smile on the patient's face and tears in her eyes. Renee made a huge difference that day to this patient and to me. Her kindness and generosity inspire me as a nurse to be more present when caring for each patient and to give care that changes a bad day to a hopeful day. Thank you, Renee!
