Patient advocate. It's easy to say. But there's nothing easy about working with a patient whose life is hanging in the balance because of a suicide attempt. There's nothing easy about following state-mandated restrictions commonly known as Chapter 51 that allow for emergency detention of individuals.

Registered nurse Mark McIntyre of the Critical Care Unit at Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire found himself advocating for his patient, who was unconscious and on a breathing tube.

"The family very much appreciated Mark's care for the patient," writes Marguerite Paradis, CCU director, in nominating McIntyre for the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. "Mark continues to impress patients, families and his colleagues. He is kind, caring and compassionate."

McIntyre was quick to share praise in this situation with health unit coordinator Julie Lowater, who helped him navigate the complexities of Chapter 51. For McIntyre, the support of all his co-workers means a great deal, especially working the night shift when some resources may not be as readily available.

"Essentially, I wouldn't be here today without the people I work with," McIntyre says. "I often feel alone (working at night), but if I was, I couldn't do my job. They are the unsung heroes. It humbles me to receive this award, seeing all those people out there."
