Brittanee is an amazing nurse as well as one of the kindest people I have ever met. She always does an outstanding job of being patient and taking the time to make all of our parents feel comfortable.
One situation that sticks out in my mind was a father whose baby had been admitted in the ICN and he bombarded us all with questions. Brittanee showed the parents how to give a bath, had the dad watch the infant CPR video 3 times until he felt comfortable with the material, she answered all his questions about the flu vaccine and Tdap that we suggest parents get. She spent over an hour and a half covering a wide variety of topics with this dad. This helped the dad to be less anxious and to trust us to care for his baby when he couldn't be there. She does this with all her patients!
Brittanee strives to educate parents so they feel more at ease being in the hospital and taking their baby home at discharge. Once we had a tearful mom in the ICN and Brittanee advocated for the mom and baby to be able to stay in a room together on pediatrics (instead of the baby being in the ICN away from the mom). This helped the mom to be calmer, work on breastfeeding and bond with her baby. Brittanee is always doing things like this, advocating for the patient (the baby) AND parent.
Recently, Brittanee worked with a mom of 34-week twins at getting the babies to tandem breastfeed. This is not an easy feat and takes skill as well as dedication from the nurse to take the extra time to assist the mom.
Brittanee is always willing to stay over to help if we have a sick baby deliver at change of shift. Her calm demeanor is a huge asset in our department as parents are incredibly anxious when their child is admitted. She explains everything thoroughly and makes parents feel good about the care their baby receives. Brittanee is the epitome of the perfect nurse: kind, smart, caring, patient, calm and professional.
