Last week Kim was at the hospital on her day off taking care of some business. She was in her car on the way out of the parking lot when an employee from the Plaza caught her attention. Kim drove over to see what was needed and found a gentleman who had left the outpatient infusion center laying on the ground next to his vehicle with the door open. Kim immediately got out of her car to assess the situation. She found the gentleman cyanotic without a pulse or respirations. She started chest compressions and told the other person to call for help. Kim continued chest compression until help arrived. The patient was then transported to the ER. She took control of the situation, tried to calm the other employee down and give direction on what needed to be done. She used her CPR training to help someone who was in need. This was a person who had an outpatient appointment, not a patient in a bed on her unit, not a patient she had a history with, or obligation to take care of but she did not hesitate to do what was needed to be done in order to give this man a chance to continue life. Her selfless actions gave his family a little extra time they would have not had if Kim did not jump into action.
By the way, she usually takes a different route out of the parking lot and would have never been involved if she went her usual way.
