Amanda Carlton impressed the entire back hall and staff with her dedication and advocacy for a patient recovering from and trying to remain free of mental health crisis. On this day, the patient was seeking admittance to a recovery clinic following her discharge. The patient could not be accepted into a clinic on the medication she was taking to control chronic anxiety. Understanding this conflict, Amanda sought the help of her covering MD, who told her there was no other medication to give. Playing the role of Nurse Advocate, Amanda spent almost an hour calling and searching for the on-call psychiatrist to speak to regarding the patent's medicine and new plan of treatment. After some time, she reached the on-call psychiatrist who said, "I'm very glad you called, and your concerns and suggestions are spot on." The MD assessed the patient and I believe a new course of treatment and care were developed. Leaving the patient satisfied and confident that her care was being handled with her recovery in mind. Again, Amanda was praised by the MD and her staff. Her service before self and dedication to care for this vulnerable population serves as a guiding example of how all RNs should practice. I can only hope that if in need, I have a nurse like Amanda Carlton to care for me!
