I had a patient transferred from ICU who was just made hospice. No family or friends were with him, his breathing was slow and irregular, his eyes were dry and lips were chapped. Yasmin was our charge nurse at that time and she helped me clean him and made him comfortable. The patient was alone and dying and Yasmin made sure to go with me to check and stay with the patient every chance she had considering the unit was busy at that time. She made time to check on the patient's religion then asked one of the nurses to make time to pray over the patient. The patient died 2 hours before the shift change and she helped me clean the patient. I was touched by how she cared for the dying patient and I appreciated how she made time to go with me to the patient's room and spent some time with the patient. I know in my heart that dying alone is a scary and very lonely way to die. I was grateful that Yasmin was there with me to at least be with him during his last hours.
