I would like to recognize some staff that dealt with a very difficult situation in the CICU Monday night and Tuesday day. A baby arrested Monday night at 11 pm. The baby was resuscitated and intubated. Family was at bedside and decided they wanted their baby extubated and to be a DNR. The baby was pronounced at 0330. While bathing the infant and preparing for transfer to the morgue the infant was noted to become pink in color and have a heart rate return with agonal breathing. The family had left, but was notified of this event and opted not to return and asked that we just notify them when she passed. Jess Adams cared for the infant throughout the night, and I can only imagine the strain this put on her as the bedside nurse. During the day, Melina Handley cared for the baby, and we all came together to comfort this infant until she ceased to breathe in my arms at 2:30 pm. I would like to recognize the following people who took turns holding this infant and being a surrogate family so that she was loved and comforted as she passed away.

Melina Handley

Scott from Palliative Care was also very comforting to both this patient and the staff and should be commended for his extraordinary compassion.

Not one person could bear the thought of this child dying alone in a crib with no family and I am proud to say this baby was surrounded by comfort and compassion. Despite a very busy unit and very sick patients there was a moment of comfort for this baby who did not deserve to die alone. At the end of the day, I feel honored to be part of this team and to see how we all came together for this infant in her time of need.
