A few weeks ago my grandfather became a patient on CCH3 for newly diagnosed heart failure. My role quickly shifted from staff member to family member. He ended up remaining inpatient for about 10 days while his team worked to regulate his fluids. Jan happened to be his nurse several times during his stay. Several days after admission, my grandfather became increasingly confused. This was extremely stressful on my family as he was fully independent and cognitively intact prior to his admission. Jan witnessed his declining condition and immediately jumped into action. She used her excellent clinical skills to determine that he had become dehydrated. She contacted the team, encouraged liquids (he had stopped drinking all water when they initiated a fluid restriction because of his own lack of understanding), and educated the patient. Even in his confused state he expressed understanding and complied with her recommendations. I am convinced that he did this because he fully trusted Jan, who had cared for him a few times previously and developed an excellent rapport with him. Jan is kind, patient, warm, personable, intelligent and proactive. Her ability to communicate clearly and think critically helped my grandfather get better and get home. His family always felt confident that he was receiving excellent care when Janet was "on watch."
