Under dire circumstances, my mother was admitted to Mission Cardiac ICU and was quite ill. Her transfer from ER and Cath Lab was in the evening of September 28, and that was our introduction to Jennifer Champion as our ICU nurse. Jennifer was extremely attentive and proactive in helping my mother recognize, define, and manage her pain. Her constant assessment of her condition helped her interpret her situation so she could stay ahead of her pain and discomfort. Jennifer also consulted mother, who is a retired nurse educator, about her options, those things that worked well for her and were optimal to her comfort and well being. That, coupled with her professionalism and sincere compassion, helped us all through a couple of very difficult nights.
As we parted, lots of hugs and tears were shared. My mother's parting words were, "Jennifer, honey, you have saved my life." High praise indeed from one of the best nurses I have ever had the privilege to know despite being my mother. I owe this young woman a debt of gratitude I shall never be able to repay. I hope this nomination honors her both personally and professionally. How do you thank someone for being a light in one of the darkest and scariest times of your life? I give thanks for exceptional nurses and the commitment they embody.
