Since her very first experience of a fetal demise, Joy knew that God had given her a special compassion for families and babies.

In May of 2012, she cared for a patient of a known intrauterine fetal demise. Little did she know that this day would be one of the most fulfilling in her entire life and nursing career.

Joy was there for her patient. She was with her as she went through the many stages of the grief process throughout the day, starting with denial as the patient wondered if there was any chance that the baby could still be alive, even though she had seen the ultrasound with no visual or audible beating heart two days prior.

With the tearful realization that delivery was soon, Joy examined the patient and was able to see a tiny precious hand presenting. She was able to prepare the patient and husband emotionally and mentally for the different appearance a 16 week baby would have. She then had the honor of delivering the tiny bundle and gave the parents the option of holding the baby. With tears, the mother held the baby with her husband supporting her at her side. The patient stated that she felt closure; even though it was hard, she could accept the death of her baby.

In the minutes and hours that passed, genetic testing choices had to be made along with decisions of cremation or burial and where these would occur. Joy, along with other staff members, dressed the baby for final pictures with the patient's and husband's wedding rings next to the tiny baby's feet and hands.

When the baby's parents were asked if a name had been decided, it was with great surprise and honor that they stated they were going to name this baby boy after Joy; Joey Joy was to be his name. The father stated that Joy had "made this day as perfect as it could have been in spite of its tragedy."

Joy is honored to a part of baby Joey Joy's short time on this earth and she will embrace all those to follow with the same love and fervency of her care.
