One day in May the ED started out as a fairly do-able day, when more and more patients came through the door; a couple with chest pain, shortness of breath, simple lacerations and dental pain. There were just two nurses working in the ED at that time, and then a patient with a potential stroke came in, which requires immediate care. This was starting to feel overwhelming when a savior walked through the door.
Mary Fessenden came through the ED to attend a class. She took one look around her and donned a blue scrub jacket and started triaging. She dispensed medications and discharged patients, and assured that patients received care in a timely manner.
Mary is a very busy mother of two teenage boys and she still thinks about the needs of the ED. She will work extra shifts as possible and is always there to help her co-workers when needed.
Compassion, patient and family-focused care, patient advocacy, support of health team members, a role model for Nursing with critical thinking skills, a passion for life: Mary is truly a great person to work with and is a definite DAISY.
