Sandra provided care one night for a 3 year old girl with chronic medical issues. The patient's mother had been having trouble during this admission with adapting to having the hospital staff provide care for her daughter, rather than her needing to provide it on her own like she does at home. This situation had escalated during the day, and a lot of emotion was present in the room when Sandra came on at 1900. Sandra worked with the mother for several hours to rebuild trust in the medical team and Doernbecher. Sandra chose to share some personal experiences with this mother that helped to diffuse the situation and allow us to continue providing care for the child.
Sandra showed immense patience in letting the mother vent her frustrations with the situation, and then she helped to find a solution that was acceptable to the whole team. Sandra deserves a DAISY award for providing an example of how nurses can excel in the art of caring and communication.
