Kathy has always given me outstanding care when I was a patient on 2400. Since I'm a "repeat offender" she has had many opportunities over the years to take care of me. There is always a smile on her face with many encouraging words and a bounce in her step. She has a wealth of knowledge, so much compassion and is overflowing with kindness. On more than one occasion she has had to demonstrate all of the above skills and qualities plus many more!

I had an adverse reaction to a medication. This caused severe confusion and many uncharacteristic behaviors. Thankfully, she knew immediately that the behavior I was exhibiting wasn't "me". Kathy took charge of the situation and did all the medically necessary treatment in addition to the emotional support I needed. Because of her knowledge, skills, compassion and kindness this experience was far less of a crisis for me than it could have been. She did what she does best: taking the greatest care of each of her patients.

The second occasion was when I was told by my doctors that "there was nothing else they could do for me". MRSA and VRE put me in ICU numerous times. Because of my urologic condition (right kidney ureter collapse and closure) and having had multiple infections, Sepsis would eventually be my demise. I was devastated, afraid out of my mind and certainly didn't know what to do. The Peoria doc's weren't sure if there was anything that could be done. Dr. K said he'd try to get a consult to see if there was anything beyond Peoria. I cried most of the day. Fortunately, Kathy worked that night. I wasn't thinking right and/or capable of making intelligent decisions. She provided such encouragement. Her words were "give it (consult & reconstruction) a try, what do you have to loose?". At that moment I felt like there was hope again. What she said "what have you got to lose?" gave me a whole new perspective and world of hope.

She helped me interpret the medical jargon that I didn't know or understand which eased my anxiety. PTL Northwestern University has a surgeon that thought she could help. The seven hour reconstruction procedure appeared to be a success. I'm happy to report today, the procedure is a success and everything is working fine. I spent 85 days on 2400 in 2014. Also was in Northwestern and Advocate Eureka an additional 35 days. Kathy Smith gave me so very much that I am not able put into words. She gives the greatest care to each and every one of her patients. I encourage you, OSF, to realize and recognize the incredible standards she expects from herself.
