Out of the many nurses my family and I met while my Mom had/recovered from bypass surgery, David stood out above all because of his kindness, reassurance, and patience. We are all so thankful that he was a constant presence while she stayed in ICU; when Mom was unconscious he distracted and reassured us. When she was afraid or uncomfortable, he was sympathetic and comforting. It's obvious that David is an intelligent, skillful nurse and that he is more than capable of caring for his patient's physical needs. My family is very grateful for David because he can be whatever the patient needs, even if that just means a patient listener.
I know that many people working in healthcare professions must desensitize themselves for their own emotional survival, but where does that leave the patient? Please recognize David for seeing my Mom as a human first, then a patient.
