Tina was outside the hospital setting when she came upon a lady sitting on a bench and noticed she looked unresponsive. Tina called out to the lady and shook her. The lady responded with, "I hurt in my chest." The lady was short of breath and her lips were turning blue. Tina checked her pulse and it was very fast. Her husband and kids arrived, and Tina found out that the lady had been a patient before with a DVT in her leg.
Tina told the husband to call 911 while Tina talked to the lady and kept her calm. Tina was able to get more help to reposition the lady and hold her head in her lap while waiting for EMS to arrive. Once EMS arrived, the lady started to have a seizure and became unresponsive with no pulse. EMS started CPR and loaded the lady in the ambulance. Tina called the hospital to alert the Emergency Department of the quick arrival of EMS as they were close to the hospital. The lady did not survive but Tina was able to find out by the family that she had a saddle PE in her lung, and they could not get it to move. This type of situation brought our nomination based on the fact that nurses never take a day away from helping others when the need arises.
