A patient arrived on NYE to the emergency department with her husband. Melanie was charge that night, introducing herself and making the husband as comfortable as she could while he sat at the bedside concerned for the wife. The patient was evaluated and admitted to the ICU but was having really bad anxiety about her husband leaving for the night. Mel had brought party hats and apple cider for the staff for New Year's Eve. Mel brought the patient's husband out of the room, gave him some cider and a party hat to celebrate with us. She took a picture of the husband and printed it to hang in the patient's ICU room. The patient recently called the emergency room asking for the picture because the husband recently passed away and that was one of the last pictures they had of him. Mel came in on her day off to give a patient representative a copy of the picture to get to this patient. Mel is constantly going above and beyond to make coworkers and patients feel welcomed. Her presence makes such a huge difference in the hospital atmosphere.
