Leo has provided care to a long-term and very difficult patient on our floor for many months now. Many nurses do not want to be assigned to this patient, however, Leo frequently volunteers to take on his care. Leo has gone above and beyond his usual job duties in caring for this patient. The patient lacks motivation and frequently gives up on progressing with his rehab. If it was not for Leo this patient would be nowhere near the progress he has made. Leo researched appropriate therapy exercises to do with the patient, above what physical therapy was doing. He got the patient to be able to start to move his legs again. Leo brought in music the patient likes and had the patient do exercises with the music. He would have him practice with his fingers like he was playing a guitar or piano and this allowed the patient to remain engaged in his rehab progression and regain dexterity in his hands and fingers to be able to feed himself again. The patient does not have a reliable family support system. When the patient was at his lowest point, Leo selflessly started coming in on his day off each week (Leo works 2 jobs) to spend time with the patient and be his psychosocial support. Leo has demonstrated extortionary compassion in caring for this patient and truly deserves recognition for being an amazing nurse.
