Over the past month I have received several notes and letters about one of our awesome nurses Jessica Howell. I would like to share some of these with you and nominate Jessica for a DAISY Award.
Jessica wrote a compelling narrative about 6 months ago that inspired a committee to form a group known as "Staff Support." Last month after floating to another floor she was moved to write a story that I found so profound I forwarded it to Rick Napper and Danine Watson.
Here are some of Danine's comments: "This is a perfect example of our ministry in action. This to me is MAGNET at its best a frontline clinical nurse sees an opportunity and finds a solution that will support both the staff and her patients. Jessica, thank you for your positive attitude and example of excellence in nursing care."
Most recently one of our patients', who passed away in July, family members wrote a Sacred Story and once again Jessica was highlighted as the nurse who showed so much compassion and the family still speak of her to this day. Here are a few quotes from that family member's story:
"There is Jessica, who worked first shift. She would sing to V songs of Zion. She loves the Lord and treated my husband as if he were her own father. She not only made sure he was taken care of, but she went out of the way to take care of me as I would not leave my beloved's side."
Another patient writes, "Jessica is very thorough and could not have done more for us. She gave excellent, compassionate care to my father, but also to us. She made sure our physical and emotional needs were met."
Last week we had the daughter of one of our physicians admitted after surgery. Jessica was the primary nurse. She gave excellent care and the physician's wife spoke to me while I was rounding about the excellent care her daughter received, "what a compassionate and gentle spirited unit 4 East is! Everyone, especially Jessica, made a difference in my daughter's recovery. Please thank them all!"
I am so proud to have Jessica on the 4 East team! She is our Practice Council Representative, our lead CLABSI nurse, where she continues to fight to reduce all central line infections hospital wide and most especially 4 East where 65% of our patients have a central line. She is a strong Unit Council member, has become a leader by taking the Mentor/Preceptor course to lead new nurses and is pursuing her specialty certification. I cannot think of a better nurse than Jessica to be training up and mentoring new nurses!
