Melissa was a great advocate for a patient on her unit. This patient suffered a terrible injury in a car accident. The accident shattered her sacrum and left her unable to fully empty her bladder. In anticipation of discharge the family was taught how to catheterize her. The patient wishing to be more independent asked if she could learn this skill for herself. The family, though loving, was also very controlling and it was difficult for this patient to try and assert herself in this way. Melissa spent a lot of time finding the correct supplies and personnel that could assist her in teaching this patient the skill she needed to become more independent when she went home, and also allow her to attend school. The patient was very grateful to Melissa that she was able to learn this skill.
We commend Melissa for her compassion and care in going the extra mile to provide this care and advocacy for her patient.
