Recently, Sarah came to the ED to assist us with a critical patient. Without getting into too many details, we had a patient in the ED who required complex care and a procedure that we had no experience performing in the ED. I called Sarah for advice and she came immediately to the ED bringing the necessary equipment, including a bed.
Sarah stayed in the ED, assisted the primary nurse with the patient's care, expedited a room assignment, and stayed with the patient for transport to the ICU. This was a rapidly evolving situation and required a nurse with excellent critical care skills and expertise; that was Sarah. The ED nurse assigned to the patient was orienting a novice nurse and was feeling overwhelmed. She told me not only had Sarah been a huge help, but she was also very supportive and spent time teaching a less experienced nurse. It is very hard for a nurse during such an intense situation to not only remain calm but to be able to turn it into a teaching experience. Sarah was an excellent role model and teacher to both of these nurses.
As a charge nurse in the ED and the ICU, Sarah and I interact regularly. I am always pleased when I find that she will be the ICU charge for a day that I am working. She is always easy to collaborate with to achieve the best placement for a patient from the ED to the ICU. I can call her for clinical advice, equipment help, and supplies or just to bug her for a room assignment and count on a positive response. Thank you, Sarah, for being an outstanding nurse!
