When I got to the ER with severe abdominal pain, they told me I would have a tube put in my nose. The experience was very traumatic for me. The nurses were very kind and patient with me. When the change of nurse shift happened, I met Mary Jane. She had a sweet spirit and a beautiful smile. She was so comforting and told me to ring my buzzer anytime and that I was not a bother. She answered all of my questions, and I had plenty. That tube felt like it was cutting into my throat and made it very painful to swallow. She gave me small towels to spit on and talked in a very soothing voice to calm me down. She would position my pillows when my neck would get a cramp because I was afraid to move for fear I would make the tube come out. She would encourage me by saying the tube was working and I could handle it when I would get very anxious. She would help me to the bathroom and never made me feel like it was an imposition. One of the nights she told me that my tube had shifted and she was going to have to insert it, I almost had a heart attack. She handed me a cup of water and said when I say take a sip, I'll push the tube in. After 2 sips, the tube was back in, and it didn't feel like a knife in my throat; it was nothing like the ER. The next day before Mary Jane was to get off, she asked if I'd like a bath and have my hair washed; I said yes. She washed my hair and found some conditioner to put in my hair because I have very thick curly hair. After combing it out, she even asked if she could braid it so it would not be in my face! She bathed me and got me some deodorant and helped me get clean clothes on. She did all of this with patience, kind words, and a smile. She went beyond the call of duty to make me feel as comfortable as a person could feel with a tube up their nose. Please let her know that if I ever need to come back to the hospital, I want her as my nurse!
