T came back to the hospital after discharge to share with me his experience with Corrine. T was in for a joint replacement surgery and claims the care he received overall was excellent. He shared with me that Corrine made a difference to him and stood out as extra special. The DAISY Award is all about celebrating the compassion nurses display when caring for patients and in T's own words that is exactly what he felt from Corrine.
He shared with me that Corrine took a genuine interest in his healing by first acknowledging what he was going through and she did so in the most sincere and genuine way possible. What stood out most to T was her ability to lower his anxiety by taking the time to explain to him how "together" they were going to manage his pain. Corrine took the time to review each of his medications and then provide an explanation and recommendation on what he should take. This simple act itself can help foster feelings in the patient that both the nurse and patient are working toward the best possible outcome.
Her willingness to listen to what T was experiencing and the meaningful conversations also were helpful in distracting him and therefore lessening his overall anxiety. Never once did T feel as though she was in a hurry and believes that she provided care in the most sincere and genuine way possible. He told me that he felt as though he was her only patient. "She attended to all my needs in the most compassionate way ever."
T was so touched by Corrine and the care she provided, he came back a 2nd time to deliver a Christmas card to her.
Corrine's holistic approach, being present, doing for patients, and forming a connection, is the art of nursing and is proven to improve outcomes and boost our patient experience. In addition, her genuine care and compassion are one of the best treatments we can provide to our patients. Thank you!!!
