Anna is an amazing nurse that consistently goes above and beyond to provide not only competent but compassionate care to her patients. She spends quality time investing in the personal wellbeing and connections to help patients feel comfortable and supported during their stay. Anna is frequently recognized for her calm demeanor, patience in the room, and grace and compassion that she provides.
A recent patient that Anna cared for exemplifies this characteristic. This patient was with us for an extended amount of time. Her complex medical history riddled with neurologic, cardiac, and pulmonary disease made her an incredible risk for decompensation and death. The patient battled day in and day out with both good days and bad. This ebb and flow of prognosis and status were hard for not only the patient to manage but also the family. With a loving and devoted husband struggling with the goals of care conversations to be had, and a family that primarily lived out of country this was not the ideal situation. After 3 weeks of trying every intervention we could manage on the floor the patient and family came to the conclusion to transition to hospice care. As Anna sat with the patient and listened to her stories, the patient acknowledged how much she loved Christmas. This patient was not going to make it until Christmas and therefore would not have the memories this year of decorating her house with her husband. Anna, after working a difficult 12-hour shift, went to the store and came back that night with the help of another nurse to decorate this patient's room with lights, and a Christmas tree. Because of her compassion and communication with the patient, and her overall dedication to decorating the patient's room, the patient's time on hospice she was surrounded by her family and the Christmas spirit.
Something so simple yet so profound shows Anna's ability to provide the utmost compassionate care to her patients. She continued her compassion by providing support and reflective thought on this patient with the entire team of her colleagues. Anna is an amazing nurse and colleague and is truly deserving of this recognition.
