I visited a friend who had been hospitalized three times in a matter of weeks. He was not doing well. The patient's wife said, "all the nurses here are wonderful." I agreed as I watched his nurse for the day, Heidi, suction him as she used the right amount of humor to help relax him. It was easy to see that she is an Extraordinary Nurse. Her years of experience were very evident as she suctioned my friend, answered his questions, and spoke in a calm teaching manner to the nursing student who was with her for the shift. With all of this happening at one time, I never saw her get upset, hurried, flustered, or ignore the student nurse. It was so obvious that she was skilled at what she was doing and that she enjoyed it as she flashed smiles at my friend and his wife and talked to them in a reassuring manner. She put the patient first and provided top-notch care.
