I was a patient diagnosed with COVID-19 on the ventilator for 3 weeks. I was very ill, not sure whether I would live or die. This experience was very scary, plus you feel all alone. You are placed in an isolated room by yourself, all you see is people dressed in space suits, no faces, only voices telling you what to do. I vividly remember the voice of a very kind, supportive, and caring nurse. She would come in my room with a soft reassuring tone and tell me it is going to be okay, I can get through this. Her name was Melissa, always so encouraging, providing the best care. Her touch was gentle with special attention to my skin, oral care, moving all my limbs in a systematic manner, and making sure I was always left in a comfortable position. She was a bright light during a very dark time in my life. She was my eyes when I couldn't see and my hope when I could not believe. She was everything to me because she gave me her best when I needed it the most. Her gentle touch/rubbing of my hands was ministering and healing.
After I got off the vent, she continued to take care of me. She pushed me to new limits. She wouldn't let me give up. She made me do my best in therapy and all components of my treatment. I called her a drill sergeant, but she was the absolute best therapy for any patient. She gave me hope and motivated me to move to a higher level. She helped me believe in myself. First, I am thankful to God, my creator, all the prayers, the faithfulness of my mom, and Melissa. Thanks to God I am progressing well. I will forever be grateful to God, the outstanding medical and nursing team at Anderson Hospital, and for the exceptional and professional care received during my extended illness.
