It seems to me that generally, people do not take the time to express their gratitude as they once did. I think that is wrong, especially when you have an extraordinary member of your team who is deserving of recognition. Not because she is courteous and professional, although those would be reason enough, but because of her heart.
I would like to draw your attention to one of your Nurses. Maggie Rhoads. I was admitted to LGH for a coronary artery bypass graft. I was transferred from another hospital to have the surgery. Maggie was my attending nurse for most of my stay. She would appear to be an exceptional example of her profession, and that assessment would be correct. The more observant may even say that Ms. Rhoads' commitment and capacity to care for her patients is reminiscent of an earlier history when such attributes were the norm and not the exception. Unlike the brusque, sometimes mechanical, "bedside manner" that is frequently associated with contemporary medical practitioners, Ms. Rhoads demonstrates extraordinary compassion for others.
Maggie's active engagement in my well-being has done far more than provide me with just getting my medications and taking care of my needs. Maggie took the time to get to know me. It turned out that she graduated from the same school I work at, and we have a couple of mutual friends. Since this was the time COVID-19, I was not allowed to have my wife or family there. Her compassion and genuine empathy for me would show through multiple times. She would take a few minutes just to talk to me and make sure everything was ok. She would keep me informed on what was happening and updates on when my surgery would be. I even believe she took the time to communicate with my wife on what was going on.
After I had surgery she stopped down to the step-down unit just to check to see how I was feeling. I never got to say thank you after that day, but I want you to know how blessed you are to have a nurse like Maggie on your staff and how blessed I was to have her and your entire staff her to walk me through the whole process.
Maggie Rhoads has a unique ability to reach others. This, to me, is evidenced by the positive effect she has had on me.
Note: This is Maggie's 2nd DAISY Award!
