During the morning at the end of Sarah's shift, a man rushed into the ED lobby and said his wife had a baby in the car. Sarah went out to the car to help the patient and found that she had delivered the baby, a baby who was premature and unresponsive. Unsure of the exact gestational age of the newborn baby, Sarah took quick action and picked the baby up. She immediately called for help and checked quickly to make sure the mother was in stable condition. It was a cold morning so Sarah removed her own jacket and wrapped the baby to keep him warm and stimulated him to see if she could get a response. His eyes opened so she began resuscitation efforts while the team came to extricate the mother from the car. Sarah remained calm, took control of the situation, and gave clear direction to the team members who came to help her. Her actions exemplified excellent, compassionate care that was delivered with safety in mind for this mother and baby. Although we don't always achieve the outcomes we're hoping for in healthcare, it is reassuring to know we have nurses like Sarah as part of the healthcare team.
