My husband had his surgery/recovery at the Metro Health facility or prostate cancer. This condition was a shock, as there were no physical symptoms. We were very anxious about the entire process. However, we had a terrific nurse named Brooke Lehner. My husband is not known to be the "best" patient, but her presence brought a calmness to every vitals check, equipment adjustment, and care given to him. She made sure he was up and walking to aid his body's recovery.
Her confidence and ready smile made us feel he was in the best hands for a great start to recovery. When it was time for him to be released, she not only provided what he had to do but also the reasons why. Her patience demonstrating the types of catheter equipment, its care, and cleaning, was very thorough. She answered clearly every question asked. We left there feeling he had the best care and chance for a quick and problem-free recovery.
William Wordsworth said it best "the best portion of a good man's life is his little, nameless, unremembered acts of kindness and love." Brooke brings that to her patients every day. She may not always have the opportunity to be presented with a lifesaving trauma situation, but her consistency of care and skill helps those she treats, feel very cared for. It's up to the person once released, to follow her advice, along with the doctor's, for the best chance of recovery. It's not an easy task dealing with the various personalities of patients and their families, but Brooke knew her calling to be a nurse, and makes it look effortless.
Thank you for letting me share this experience with Nurse Brooke.
