A surgical patient who is paraplegic, nominated Howard for the DAISY award not only for being kind and caring in the recovery room, but also in going above and beyond to see that he arrived home safely. He said when he was scheduled to return home following surgery, the medical van that normally takes him to and from doctors' visits did not have room for his wheelchair in the van that day.
"Miss Susan knew I couldn't do anything without my wheelchair. So she called her husband, and he said he would come put my wheelchair in his truck and follow the van to my apartment. I then found out that Miss Susan's husband was coming all the way from Roanoke (Ala.) just to get my wheelchair. Now, that's some special people."
He said he nominated Howard for the DAISY Award as a way of thanking her for making him feel special and for waiting with him for almost two hours while his transportation was being arranged.
"She talked to me the whole time. I hope if I have more surgery, that Miss Susan will be there to take care of me."
