As I went into premature labor at 27 weeks, my mind could only wonder how the day would end. I went into an emergency c-section, I was unable to get an epidural so I was put under. When I woke up, my fiancé said "He is doing alright". We walked into the NICU to see our son surrounded by people, but one person stood out. What do you think? What should we do Deb? Where is Deb? It was evident she was the go-to gal.
After everything settled we were greeted by the sweetest person we had the pleasure of meeting. I will never forget the first few weeks of our son M's life under the watchful eyes of Deb. They were watching him closely because he was not out of the woods yet. Every move taken by the doctors and nurses was critical. Deb was always direct and informed us of what she was doing. There was a lot going on and she explained every bit of it. Her knowledge is never ending and it was clear by the care she gave M. There is no doubt in my mind that Deb's clinical practices soar above and beyond expectations.
She is smart in every move she makes. Deb is a person with a contagious attitude. Her list of things to do could be spilling over and you would never know it. When I look at my son, I can't help but see Deb's sweet face. Her compassion for M is something I will never forget. Not only did she give M the best care, she gave us the best care. M wasn't her only patient. We were 3 hours from home, but not when Deb was there. Deb made room 608B feel like home. When we got there in the morning Deb would always have a plan for us that day. With Deb, I got to hold my son for the first time. She cried right along with me. With Deb, we began breastfeeding. She was there every step of the way and told us we were going to have the "best day" ever!
After 79 days in the NICU we were released to go home and no better person to walk us out than Deb. She gave our son everything under the sun, but most importantly she gave him her unshaken compassion. Deb is an amazing nurse and is definitely doing what she was put on earth to do: heal, encourage, laugh, smile, decide, help and love.
