I got a call from my brother that they had brought our Dad, to the emergency room. He was at North Adams Nursing Home in Mendon and was found unresponsive, but by the time the EMT's arrived he was responsive. I live in Cincinnati, Ohio so this was a 7 ½ to 8-hour drive to get back to Quincy.
When I arrived, they had Dad in ICU and stable. Penny was so nice and accommodating for me and my family. The doctor had spoken with my stepmom and my brother already. My brother and I were not aware of the DNR order that my Dad had said he wanted, so when they mentioned the word ventilator my brother flipped out.
Penny realizing that we were caught off guard and in a real emotional chaos pulled us down an isolated hallway to talk with us and explain our options for Dad's future. This was the hardest thing because we never were a family that talked about death. Penny was so kind and I believe she went above and beyond for our family. The way she explained things to us was so kind and caring. I thank God for her every day. Her gentle way of talking to us and even being there for hugs when I thought I would fall to my knees. She was so wonderful with my Dad as well. It was like she was part of our family.
One morning I remember coming back into the ICU with my brother. Penny was in the hallway and said "there is my Family!" How are you both doing?
Dad's last day in ICU, I recall them coming in two to three times to get blood. I started freaking out when they kept sticking him and were unable to find a vein. I said please stop and had someone get Penny. She came in and told them we had made the decision to keep Dad comfortable. She explained that I could refuse them attempting to take blood. Thanks to Penny I was able to calm down.
Penny is a true professional and such a kind, caring, and loving nurse and person. She is certainly a role model for nurses everywhere. I know my family is so grateful for Penny and she will always hold a special place in our hearts.
