My son, TJ, fell from a trampoline, breaking both bones in his forearm. His hand was just dangling there, able to touch his elbow. My heart sank when I swooped him up, I instantly knew we had to get to the hospital ASAP. On the way to the ER I was mentally preparing myself to wait in the waiting room for 5 hours before my son received care. Upon arrival, we were greeted by a nurse who was so patient and understanding. She asked my son what was wrong, and with one look at his arm she sent us to a room right away, allowing us to finish signing in and completing forms while my son was being cared for.
Thomas Lenderman was my son's nurse and we couldn't have asked for anyone better. Thomas was patient, explaining everything in a way that a three-year-old could understand. He was not only kind, but he made all the scary stuff not so scary. He answered ALL of TJ's questions and made him feel comfortable.
During our visit, there was never a time when TJ cried or was fearful because Thomas was always by his side. Even when my son was sedated while the doctor was resetting his arm, my son would call out to Thomas, "Thomas, where are you - I can't see you Thomas". Thomas would reply, "I am right here buddy, I am not going anywhere: TJ would whisper to me, "I like Thomas mom, he is my friend'.
As a mom, hearing that my son is okay and is not afraid in that type of environment, filled my heart with joy. Thomas completely shaped the way my son thinks of hospitals, he will never be afraid. TJ talks of Thomas often, even asking if we can buy red Nikes for him like Thomas has. When we were on our way home from the ER visit, my son was talking about how nice Thomas is and asked if we could buy him a house!
TJ will remember him for the rest of his life. Believe it or not, TJ breaking his arm is going to be a good memory my son will carry with him and it is all thanks to Thomas and the wonderful people you have turning these horrific experiences into comfortable, positive ones. I cannot thank you all enough. It was the best ER visit of my life and because it was my son who was in need, I will be forever grateful.
We have an appointment to have TJ's hard cast removed today. His first experience (hopefully his last) with broken bones is coming to an end. Thank you for being the best part of this journey. I wish there was more than kind words that I could offer. You all deserve so much more. You have touched my heart, put my mind at ease and took the very best care of my baby. You are truly angels on earth. Thank you a million times a million!
