Recently Carol went above and beyond to ensure a patient's needs were met. Near the end of a 12-hour shift that started at 3 AM, a patient was being discharged from the ER following an accident in which his bicycle was destroyed. The patient is in the US for a short time and is very unfamiliar with US insurance practices and customs. The patient was waiting for a call back from the local police to request a ride home and learn the fate of his bicycle, but at shift change there was no call back.
Carol offered to give the patient a ride to the police station to inquire about the damaged bicycle. The patient was recouping from being thrown from the bicycle and it was nearly 100 degrees outside. After not receiving any information from the police department, Carol gave the patient a ride to where his bike was being held, but it was not operable. She gave him a ride home and learned this was the only transportation for him as well as two others who were here with him. They used it to get groceries, get to the store and get anywhere they needed to go besides work.
Carol then went home and with her husband decided to donate two bicycles that they had in storage and weren't using to this patient and his coworkers so they would have a means of transportation. The patient and his friends were so grateful! This story really exemplifies Carol's thoughtfulness, resourcefulness and commitment to patient care and well-being.
