Misty was the nurse for a patient in the SICU a week before Christmas. The patient stated that she was sad to miss her favorite Christmas tradition of baking cookies. The next day, Misty brought in a large box of homemade cookies for the patient. This gesture brought the patient to tears. That same night the patient and her grandson were discussing the Christmas lights outside and how it was difficult to tell it was Christmas from inside the ICU room. After providing the patient with safe and effective care, Misty used her very limited downtime to print and color dozens of paper Christmas lights. In the morning, Misty bathed her patient and assisted her up to the bathroom. While in the bathroom, Misty filled the patient's room with strands of paper Christmas lights. The patient was, again, incredibly grateful. Misty did so much more than show kindness, empathy, compassion, and attention to detail. She even did more than go above and beyond. While providing her patient with safe and healing care, she sacrificed herself, her time, and even some of her own funds to meet the needs of this patient. Misty is what every nurse should strive to be.
