Our father was transported to UI Hospitals & Clinics for further evaluation after suffering a traumatic injury. Early in the morning, we received the devastating news that he was brain dead and we were left with the option to remove him from the ventilator.
Our time with him was very limited after the disconnect. From that moment on, everything faded into oblivion. Our life, as we knew it, shattered before us. It is not possible to know how one feels during atragedy, but the compassion, care, professionalism, and utmost respect that Kelly Poch showed our family, friends, and most importantly my father, is something that is deserving of the highest recognition.
There is so much to be taken from the series of events that surrounded us from the short time we were there, but the simplest lesson is to serve like Kelly. Although we had an unimaginable outcome and instead of spending Christmas with our dad, we were planning his funeral services, I want Kelly to know that she forever holds a special place in our hearts.
It's not fair to list everything she did for us, as my mental capacity wasn't clear, at the time, but the importance is that she provided my father exemplary care and for that, we are forever grateful. No words can explain the deep pain, nor will it change the outcome, but having Kelly's presence with us was indescribable. My hope, for Kelly, is that she found fulfillment in the role she played, and it compels her to continue to go far beyond the expectations of her duties. Future families and patients are blessed to be in Kelly's care.
Upon departure, my brother made the comment to Kelly, 'I don't know how you do this every day.' I will never forget her response, 'If I had to do this every day, I probably wouldn't do this job.' Kelly, you're a dear angel to us and take pride in the care you provide not only to your patients but their families. We will never forget you!
