Paul is a big advocate for Veterans since he is also a Veteran. He goes above and beyond daily helping and assisting a Veterans. He encourages them to use My Healthy Vet. He made a poster informing Veterans about reduced rates for their license plates. Every day it is simple things that make a big difference in the Veteran's perception of CAVHS. If a Veteran has a problem he will research it until he can find the answer.
Recently, a father and son showed up in Derm. Both were Veterans. The father had an appointment at another clinic. The son was concerned about a lesion he had found on himself. Paul looked at it and thought it might be a melanoma. The son was seen on an emergent basis for a biopsy. The biopsy did come back as melanoma. In the meantime, the son was concerned because his father was missing his appointment and someone needed to go with his father. Paul took the father to his appointment and made sure he got checked in, while the son was getting his biopsy.
Another Veteran had a melanoma. When Paul called the Veteran he was in Las Vegas and said he would not return for 4-5 months. His procedure would need to be done in Las Vegas. Paul called fee service and was informed they could do nothing because they had no contract services there. He continued to call around talking to staff at CAVHS and found out all VAs have a Traveling Vet Care Coordinator. He was unable to contact the CAVHS Coordinator so he called Las Vegas and talked to several people there until he reached the Las Vegas Travel Coordinator. The Veteran had a urology appointment at the Las Vegas VA that day. Paul called the Veteran and gave him the coordinator's name and number. The coordinator put a consult into the Las Vegas Derm to get the surgery scheduled in Las Vegas.
