Our developmentally disabled adult son D underwent a procedure to place a kidney stent. He was quite ill. To add to his anxiety as well as mine, D is non-verbal and has minimal communication ability.
In post-op, Evelyn noticed D seemed anxious and was becoming agitated. She realized he did not recognize any familiar faces and was looking around the room with just his eyes to find someone. When he saw Evelyn, he calmed down.
Out of understanding and compassion, she purposely positioned herself in such a way that she could continue her tasks but still be seen by D at all times while he was in post-op. He was content if he could see her. As soon as safely possible, she released him back to his room and his waiting family. Evelyn showed caring to someone who could give nothing in return, not even a smile. She saw D beyond his body. Perhaps Evelyn was able to see a smile that no one else could see.
