At the end of shift, while giving report to the night shift CDF, we were called to a room where a rapid was just called.
The patient was desating into the 70s, BP was 70/40's.
It was complete chaos in the room. While I was trying to help as much as I could I also noticed the patient's 14-year-old grandson who was in the room on the phone with his uncle.
I tried to talk to him about what was going on but I couldn't quite give him the focus he needed.
Next time I turned to him to give an update Mindy Linvell was sitting next to him talking to him about his grandmother and everything that was going on.
Every time I turned around to check on him, Mindy was right there talking to him about his family (how many siblings he had, did he have family in town, how he slept the night before, could she call someone for him).
When I think about how scared that 14-year-old boy was, seeing his grandmother struggling to breathe, 6-10 nurses and doctors all coming in and out of the room, drawing blood, doing X-rays, listening to her lungs and talking about her condition, I'm brought almost to tears. I can't imagine how scared he was watching all of that, alone, with no adult family to help him.
Mindy went above and beyond to help the child in the room understand what was happening, call adults and try to ease his fears. I am so proud to work in F7 where the staff cares, not just for the patient but also for the family.
Mindy has only been an RN for about a year but she has proven to be an asset to our floor, not only for her nursing skill but also her compassion for others.

At the end of the shift one day there was a rapid response called to one of the rooms on F7. There was complete chaos in the room. It was noticed by the CDF that the patient's 14-year-old grandson was in the room. He was very afraid and the CDF reported that she was busy with the response call and could not spend a lot of time explaining what was going on to him. She turned and noticed that one of the F7 nurses had come into the room and she was talking to him about his grandmother and what was going on. She never left his side and talked to him the entire time. It was terrifying to him to watch his grandmother struggle to breathe and all that was going on around her. Mindy went above and beyond to help this boy understand what was happening. She called other family members to come to be with him and eased his fears. I am so proud to work with the staff here on F7. They are not only here for the patients but also for the family.
