Our entire experience at Memorial was good and we are so thankful for the care my mom received. There were a few individuals who stood out; they went above and beyond the call of performing their nursing duties and touched our lives with kindness and left us more at ease during a time when things felt very much out of control and scary.
I would like to thank my mom's nurse, James. He went above and beyond to provide her with the most excellent care. She was scared and anxious and in a lot of pain and he was patient and so very kind to her. He listened to her stories and explained every procedure, medication, and test carefully and in easy terms so that she could understand. He made her laugh through her tears in a very difficult time and we are so thankful for his care. He always asked about her pain and was prompt when she asked for medications and never failed to follow-up to make sure she had gotten some relief. He worked with her for 4 days during the most difficult time - before her surgery. She wasn't able to even turn herself over in bed, but please let him know that she has been in inpatient rehab for 2 days now and she is learning to walk on her own again! We are so thankful!

I would like to thank and recommend our nurse, James Gonser. James was very helpful to my father during his stay at Memorial. My father has never been in the hospital for more than an outpatient procedure until recently. Upon our arrival at the hospital, James made an immediate impression on my father by relating a personal story concerning his father to my dad. You see, my dad is suffering from lymphoma and has been very afraid about what his future may hold. My dad has been a hard worker all his life and has never been down. This lymphoma has changed all that and my father has been feeling very vulnerable since his diagnosis. James related to my dad that his father had suffered the same type of cancer and had after many months of treatment along with some setbacks, made a complete recovery. James related that his father was strong like my dad and there was a lot of similarities between the two men and their cancer cases. This changed my father's outlook considerably. My dad took an immediate liking to James and relayed his story to all who visited. I believe that James relating his story, it gave my dad hope for a similar recovery. James was an inspiration to my dad throughout his stay at Memorial and anytime he came around, my dad would visibly brighten up. James was very cheerful all the time and very accommodating to us. My dad still speaks of him often. I believe James relating his story is the reason my dad is doing so well today. Given the history of this award, James is the embodiment of all things right in the nursing profession. We will never forget the kind words and treatment that he gave my dad and our family.
