Early this year my colleague Kevin Crawford received his certification as a GI Nurse. Kevin did not enjoy being the only nurse in our department with such a distinguished title. Being a co-worker with a great and unselfish heart, he began to encourage me and other co-workers to become certified as well. Kevin went above and beyond. He set time aside and began to study with me and another co-worker, making sure we grasped the concept, not just memorizing "stuff".
Endoscopy is a very fast paced department. There were days when all we wanted to do was just go home and hit the bed, but Kevin stayed after work every week to go over materials. He made sure we got the information we needed to ace that test. Kevin is a spouse, a father and is very engaged, involved in our department and the organization as well. Some days we could tell he was super tired (being up all night with his 2 little boys (4 and 2 years old). But he gave his best during 2 to 3 hours of study.
When I began doubting myself, Kevin was the cheerleader behind me "you can do it, you can do it". Thanks to Kevin's support, I am now a Certified GI Nurse. Kevin truly is a role model in our department. He exemplifies this "Passion for Excellence" one of the Core Values of NGHS, not just for him, but for his peers as well.
