Recently, the MIMCU cared for a long-term patient who was co-managing a mental health condition and substance abuse disorder until the patient could be transferred to an appropriate treatment facility. Megan was the patient's regular nurse on day shift. The patient made remarks that she felt she looked ugly and wished she had her makeup. The next day, Megan brought in make-up that she had personally purchased for the patient. The patient's mood and demeanor improved dramatically, and the healthcare team was able to have more therapeutic interaction than on previous days. This ultimately led to a successful transition in the patient's care.
