Kathy exemplifies extraordinary compassion and sensitivity to self and others. She instills faith and hope and a continued commitment to excellence. The following examples demonstrate this nominee's extra-ordinary commitment to patient-centered care.
Kathy was the assigned nurse on Day Shift this past weekend when my mom was admitted to the Oncology Unit. I was in the patient room off and on throughout the day last Saturday. Kathy consistently engaged in all best practices including:
Hand hygiene, both entering and leaving the patient room, in front of the patient
AIDET and customer service scripting
Kathy explained the plan of care and testing instructions in plain English
She always asked if the patient and visiting family had any questions
Always answered, "My pleasure" with genuine sincerity and caring
Kathy always treated the patient and family with full courtesy and respect
Conducted bedside shift report at the bedside and included the patient and family in the process. She also exemplified caring for her on-coming colleague, who had been floated from another unit and was unfamiliar with that unit and the patient care requirements. Kathy stayed late to take the extra time needed for that bedside shift report, with a smile.
During the night, my mom went into A-fib and we are very grateful the night shift nurse had been floated from COU (God smiled on my mom that night with such wonderful nurses!). The extra special part was the next morning, Kathy took the time to check on my mom after she had been transferred to CVU during the previous night. Kathy demonstrated above-and-beyond caring by that wonderful visit.
Although my mom's care by all her nurses exemplify Dr. Jean Watson's Caritas Processes, Kathy truly deserves the DAISY Award. Not only did she take fantastic care of my mom, she also took fantastic care of my brothers, my father and me (which isn't easy when two of them are physicians and another who is a hospital team member).
Our family is very grateful for her care! Kathy is a role model for our nurses and other caregivers.
