Recently we had a child who came to us from foster placement. Although there was hope to be adopted early in the foster process, this child began to display aggressive behavior in placements and was about to be moved to a new home. This child was in the hospital at Christmas and had learned of another rejection by a possible family. This situation and disappointment fueled the aggressive behaviors.
Jothanie Pryor developed a wonderful relationship with this young patient. The child smiled and interacted easily with her. Though the child continued to struggle with irritability and poor self-esteem, there was acceptance by Jothanie that brought peace to the child. One example of this was shortly before Christmas the child became angry, threw an item, and began cussing and using other foul language. Jothanie allowed time for the child to calm down by being firm but supportive, pointing out choices and consequences but not lecturing. Even after these events, I witnessed the child seeking her out for a hug or other reassurance. Through the relationship, I believe Jothanie engaged in the healing process for this child.
So many times, I have seen Jothanie work with children who struggle with aggressive behavior and angry outbursts. She redirects them, makes sure they are safe, but also continues to accept them. They can sense that. She is also attentive to their other needs as well and helps the unit maintain a fun atmosphere. Children in her care tend to require fewer PRN medications.
She is engaging with parents, providing them with information in a way they can understand, and facilitates communication between doctors and families. Overall, Jothanie stands out as a nurse who is a tremendous asset to our facility and those within her care. Through her actions, she encompasses the DMH Values of accountability, compassion, excellence, and safety.
