Rachel called me and said she had a lady that she was discharging from triage this morning due to being in a car accident yesterday. Her significant other had (I think) rode a train to Charlotte with 3 children and obtained an Uber ride to the hospital to meet the patient. When he got here he did not have money to pay. When on the unit he asked Rachel for money to pay driver. Apparently, he asked other staff and no one had the extra $15.00 to give him. After talking to him and the patient, Rachel and I walked out and then we went into an empty patient room and she told me what she thought she should do. She said a couple of weeks ago at her church the congregation was given something like a blessing envelope with different amounts of money and the congregation was to give it to someone who was in need. She said she had the money in her billfold and she felt this was the right time to give it and that is what she did. Both the man and the patient cried because his billfold was in the wrecked car at a junkyard.
Rachel is a wonderful role model and she is such a dedicated employee and nurse to the patients and to the organization. I have deep respect for Rachel and University is fortunate to have her.
