As we prepare for discharge from the NICU, I would like to take this time to thank one of our nurses who has continued to go above and beyond for our family, time and time again. I had identical twin boys born three months before my due date. They were a bit over 14 weeks premature. We are currently on day 86 in the NICU. We could have not made it through this journey without Becky.
We lost one of the boys at 17-days-old. Becky was their nurse and continued to take care of H after N had passed. She was very straightforward in what to expect and got me through the toughest hurdles surrounding when N got sick to when he passed, and thereafter.
For example, after N passed, Becky worked with me to begin to hold H again and feel comfortable spending time with my child and touching him. N passed from infection and I blame myself a lot that it was because I touched him. More than likely, I would probably not have let anyone else guide me to do this, each day a step more towards reconnecting with my surviving twin. Becky has been there for me time after time and continues to check-in on our wellbeing. She has sat with us as we have cried and offered her shoulder to cry on more times than I can count.
Last week, as I was preparing for our son to come home, many emotions came to light. Due to post-partum and grief, I lost it in the NICU. It has been a bittersweet journey, no doubt. Becky was able to calm me down and get me the services that I needed. I have since started therapy and will forever be grateful for her. She is not only a NICU nurse, but she is also our family's superhero! H loves her too! H lights up when Becky comes into the room and he hears her voice. She is one of the few people that has made this isolating experience tolerable, knowing I could come home, and he will be taken care of the way I would. We will surely miss our Becky.
